Happy New Years

It's New Years Eve. Tomorrow will be a new year. We will write 2011 on our papers, but that is basically all that will change. We make New Year resolutions we will keep for maybe a week. We will go back to school and to work and it will be the same old thing we left behind in 2010. Why do we make such a big deal of a New Years?
To me, New Years Eve represents something new. It is a new start and a new chance, and this world is all about chances. Some things you can't control, so you need to take the most of your chances. New Years is the chance to be a better person. Make the most of your chances and embrace them.
Happy New Years!

Columbus Day, or not?

Today if you ask any American kid who discovered America, most likely the vast majority of them would say Christopher Columbus. In school, we spend a lot of time learning about Christpher Columbus and his voyage. In Kindergarton, we even put on a play about him. They rarely give credit to the Vikings or the Chinese, who evidence says was there long before Columbus. But they almost never give credit to the real discoverers of America, the native Americans.

Almost every written document of people who ventured to America mention the natives. The natives had already created themselves a civilization long before any European set eyes on the Americas. They were there when all the explorers came, but they are never given credit. They are the true discoverers of America, and should be given credit for that.

Americans always give the credit to Europeans, even when the credit is not due. Americans are never truthful, especially when it comes to Native Americans\Europeans, and they should be. There is a federal holiday that we get the day off from school for. It is named after not the true discoverers of America, or even the first explorers to go there. It is named after the European who wasn't even one of the first ones to go there. I though we were supposed to learn the truth in school? I guess not.

Friendly's

On Sunday, July 18th, Friendly's turned 75 years old. I think we all need to say Happy Birthday to a good old dinerish resturant with good grilled cheese, ice cream, and a good attitude. Happy Birthday! For more information click here.

Moisen World is making July 18th Friendly Day!!!

Cinco de Mayo- Fifth of May

This past Wednesday was Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May). Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates the victory over the French in the battle of Puebla in 1862. Cinco de Mayo is one of the most well-known Mexican holidays in the United States, so I was always under the impression it was a very big holiday in Mexico, like the Fourth of July here. But my Spanish teacher told me it really wasn't. It is not, as many people think, Mexican Independence Day, which is in Septembr. Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla. It is recognized and celebrated in other areas of Mexico, but not as much. CInco de Mayo is actually celebrated as much above the border as it is in Mexico. As well as people with Mexican heritage who celebrate it in the USA, the commercial industry has promoted the holiday, with products having to do with Mexican food. Cinco de Mayo has always been on the calender, but not until this year did I actually learn what it was!
Here is the website that my Spanish teacher showed me about the holiday. Click here.

The Daily Poetical

Happy Halloween!!!!

Here is a Harry Potter Ode (Magical.... suitable for Halloween)

Ode to Harry Potter Book

Journey's of Harry Potter
Sitting on the shelf
I pick up
The heavy book
Cover ripped and folded
But somehow still smooth
Thick as a dictionary
As I open the doors
To another universe.
Smells of Hogwarts
Drift into my head
The familiar scent of the pages
Brings back the adventures
And I start to read.
I can hear Harry's british accent
Mad-Eye Moddy's grumbling voice
Spells being cast left and right
I can taste the Welcoming Feast
And the chocolate frogs.
The suspenseful story intrigues me
Untill I am lost
In a magical world.

Halloween Themed Poems

Candy

Covered in sugar,

Always need more-

Never anough,

Dentists nightmare, but to us, just

Yummy

by Alyssa

All Hallow's Night

by Lizzette Woodworth Reese

Two things I did on Hallow's Night;-

Made my house April-clear,

Left open wide my door

To the ghosts of the year.

Than one came in. Across the room

It stood up long and fair-

The ghost that was myself-

And gave me stare for stare.

Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins,

Sitting on a gate

The forst one said "Oh, my it's getting late!"

The second said "There are witches in the air."

The third one said "But we don't care."

The fourth one said "Let's run, run, run."

The fifth one said "Get ready for some fun!"

Then WOOOSHH went the wind and out went to lights

and the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
