Book of the Week

by Jeanne DuPrau

"Lights shine in the city of Ember—but at the city limits the light ends, and darkness takes over. Out there in the Unknown Regions, the darkness goes on forever in all directions. Ember—so its people believe—is the only light in the dark world.

And now the lights are going out.

Is there a way to save the people of Ember? No one knows. But Lina Mayfleet has found a puzzling document, and Doon Harrow has made discoveries down in the Pipeworks. With these clues, they start their search."

Birthdays

Happy Birthday Kayla!

Contests

1. Now, some nice people [actually just one, thank you Alyssa] gave me new ways to save the earth. Here they are:

- Use energy saving lightbulbs (those spiral ones).
- Use reusable grocery bags.
- If you have to use plastic grocery bags, keep them so they can be reused for something else.
- Carpool
- Use a lunchbox instead of a paper bag.
- Don't Litter
- Pick Up Litter
You can still send in ideas for that contest!

2. Send in beautiful pictures of nature! I will put them in the following MWG’s starting June 1st.

3. The first person send me the correct awnsers to these three questions about birds will get a fablous prize!

1. How fast can
ostriches fly?

2. True or False: The hummingbird can fly backwards.

3. Are birds warm-blooded or cold-blooded?

Fun-Fact: Most flying birds feathers weigh more than their bodies.

You know the contest I had a few issues ago about the Isabel stanza’s? Here is one.

Isabel once met a tiny old rat,
Isabel didn't think much about that.
The rat's teeth were sharp although it was small,
Then quickly the rat grew 40 times as tall.
Isabel, the rat asked, do you know what you'll get?
Just one more short minute of your life I bet.
Isabel, Isabel didn't worry,
Isabel didn't scream or scurry.
She swiftly jumped up as high as a cat,
Then Isabel, Isabel squished the old rat.

Book of the Week

THE LIGHTNING THEIF
by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse-Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends -- one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena -- Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

This is an amazing book! It takes a topic, one you learn in school, and makes it funny! Rick Riordan is brilliant! -Allie, Moisen World Gazette starred review

The Daily Poetical

Noisy, Noisy
by Jack Prelutsky

It's noisy, noisy overhead,
The birds are winging south,
And every bird is opening
A noisy, noisy mouth.
They fill the air with loud complaint,
They honk and quack and sqwak,
They did not feel like flying,
But it was much to far to walk.

Mother Earth
by Allie

Give Mother Earth,
A hug for me,
Be kind to her,
Go hug a tree.

NOW THE MOISEN WORLD GAZETTE IS INTRODUCING A BRAND NEW TYPE OF POETRY A …………

FOURKU! A fourku has four lines and each line has four syllables.
One example is “Mother Earth” and another is one I wrote in 4th grade.

Tree
Standing up high,
Giving us air,
Shedding your leaves,
When Fall is there.
